COTTON MUSEUM - HATCHING EXTRACTION 12" LP

Primarily composed using a Serge modular synthesizer, Roland Space-Echo and other custom electronic instruments. Eight tracks of horrid electronics clocking in at just over 40 minutes. Crawling and claustrophobic sounds of nocturnal rituals. Experiments performed deep beneath the tangled roots. A regiment of dripping sap pumping life into swollen larvae. Hatching and squirming, emerging from their eggs. Forever entombed and secluded within the earth, fearing the sounds of a life underground.

Limited to 500 hand numbered copies, complete with double sided insert and digital download card. Recorded July 2011 through January 2012 in Detroit, MI. Artwork, layout and recording by Chris Pottinger.

Often a record’s artwork communicates more about genre expectations and the marketing categories a label wants to reach than the content of the album. But in the case of a Cotton Museum release, the artwork and the audio are almost equal partners, co-creating a multidisciplinary objet d’art. Detroit’s Chris Pottinger handles both music and drawing, and self-releases the majority of his label Tasty Soil. Hatching Extraction is a burbling symphony of flatulent bog noise. In contrast to today’s Krautrock-inspired synth music that relies on outer space imagery, Pottinger makes synthesizers sound terrestrial, even subterranean. The music is so active and densely layered that one can imagine one is hearing different depths of gaseous swamp matter and gore, stacked in striations, with a cloud of buzzing wasps swarming above. The record is impeccably recorded and full of detail, and the jacket is adorned with Pottinger’s adorable/repulsive creature drawings - this time it looks as if a cartoon character has been turned inside out, revealing tumors and muck. Cotton Museum’s music and art both explore a state somewhere between cute and disgusting. Like a snotty monster that wants a hug.
