Odd Clouds is a roving collective of Detroit’s most touched savages led by the restless vision of bandleaders Chris Pottinger (Cotton Museum/Tasty Soil Records) and Jamie Easter (formerly of the Pirhannas and Little Claw, now touring solo as a perfomance artist of the most disturbing caliber.) The group is prone to impropmtu and somewhat confrontational public performance, lysergic deep-woods jamming and the like, and their bone-through-the-nose approach to music comes through strong on wax. Gutteral grunting, animalistic howls, blathering bursts of woodwinds and electronic noise bubble up to the surface of primal percussion and sounds of creatures dying and being born. Sounding like a feild recording of a late-60’s cult farmhouse celebration or a private-press psyche record of the same era.

ODD CLOUDS
"DECEIVING ILLUSION" 12" LP (2009) NNF143

Discogs link here.

A thousand years ago, in 2006, Michigan moonlighters ODD CLOUDS drizzled down their LP opus, The Cavernous End. Within the sphere of open-eyed freeform organized psych-jazz sprawl, nothing compared. Years later that album still kills, but not much has followed in its wake (there have been some loose tapes but those roll in a cruder basement fuckaround vein). So we are personally xxtremely pleased to be able to finally offer up the band’s latest album-length affair, Deceiving Illusion. A six-song spelunk into the deranged group brain responsible for noise scene mainstays like Fag Tapes and Tasty Soil Records, Illusion rumbles through a hall of mirrors of zones/styles, from freaky garbage punk to robot throat games to motorik brass meditations to unhinged ‘70s German commune beardo psych-blazers. The journey is the destination and all that. Abuse yr Illusion. Black vinyl LPs in stunning 4-color pro-silkscreened jackets with artwork by CHRIS POTTINGER and JAMIE EASTER, plus a double-sided photocopied insert. Edition of 400.

ODD CLOUDS
"SELF TITLED" 12" PICTURE DISC LP (2008) QBICO79

Discogs link here.

Recorded between 2004-2007 in Detroit, Ferndale and Hamtramck Michigan

I’ve got a picture disc of (initially) nightmarish minimal free jazz stumbling & spazzed out voodoo drone made by people with a healthy disregard for any semblance of a tune. Instead Odd Clouds sound like a bunch of zombies in chains falling around in a church whilst some experimentalists tune up. Then the druid monks come out to chant over some beautiful tribal drumming and spectral skronk. The sheer scale of otherworldly sounds produced by this 8 strong collective is quite stunning indeed and only occasionally makes for challenging listening. On the whole there’s lots of absorbing textures, unnerving ghoulish noises and howls mingling with some proper out-there chattering & squawking jazz horn manipulations & industrial ambience. If you’ve ever imagined wolves playing jazz in an abandoned church with lots of found percussion then this is your album of the week. A most rewarding listen indeed and not a patch as headache inducing as I feared! The flip sounds like the barmiest thing alive, just as discordant and fascinating with touches of Thinking Fellers or Sun City Girls out-rock tribal discordance & wibbling freak-noise.

“Last night, I listened to an excellent album called Cleft Foot of the Woods, by Odd Clouds. Just a hand-assembled case and CD-R with the album’s title scrawled across it, one of 150 made. This is how I feel in the world, and I spend a lot of time with this kind of music.”

Black psychedelic improvised bloop that sounds like Black Ark-era Arthur Doyle plays the Hawkwind back catalogue live from the other side. Totally fucked celestial tones, low-grade tape mush, cut-up crud, drums/electricity. Think Of Daily Dance re-scored for a phantom Sun Ra punkestra or a barely erased Ashtray Navigations/Blue Humans take on Billy TK’s post-Hendrix trance. Too fucking much and one of the best Fag Tapes yet. “Side A recorded through one of those like gold framed mirror forcefield transparent mercury teleportation transport walls you see in th’ movies. Side B recorded live.” Hand-numbered edition of 65 copies. Highly recommended.
